Refuse Handing
To minimise refuse-related issues, we adhere to the fundamental principle of waste management: “separation at source.” All waste must be sorted at the point of disposal. We provide three designated containers for the following categories:
1) glass (bottles, etc.) and metal items (cans, beer cans, etc.),
2) plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, and packaging materials, and
3) all wet and organic kitchen waste. Organic and general kitchen waste will be composted in a designated compost pit.
Please ensure that all refuse is placed in the appropriate bins for further handling and treatment.
We encourage visitors who enjoy beer to utilise local 550ml reusable beer bottles, which not only save money but also help reduce waste.
Fauna and Flora
To protect the natural beauty of the dunes and coastal forests, we request that no bushes, trees, or vegetation be damaged. Vehicles should only be driven on existing roads; off-road driving or dune driving is strictly prohibited.
Please do not harm any animals or reptiles, including geckos, lizards, and snakes. It is advisable to leave them undisturbed, as some snakes can be poisonous, though encounters are rare. If a snake is found in a house or confined space, please contact Martin for assistance.
Beach Access
There is a footpath leading to the beach through the forest and over the dune. An access road is also available for experienced 4×4 drivers. Please note that simply reaching Calanga Phati via sand road does not qualify you as an experienced sand driver.
Driving along the beach is prohibited without a permit. We kindly ask that you do not litter on the beach and return all refuse to the house.
Lakes
The lakes at Calanga are freshwater bodies, and no powercraft are permitted on them. These lakes serve as a vital drinking water source for local communities, who are protective of their water supply. Please respect this essential resource. Activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and rowing are allowed.
Noise Regulations
Please be aware that quad bikes are not permitted, and loud music or noise that may disturb others is not allowed. Calanga Phati Eco Camp is an eco-friendly destination, and the natural tranquillity and serenity are among its main attractions.
Off-Grid Living
Calanga Phati Eco Camp operates entirely off-grid. Each accommodation is powered by solar panels, charge controllers, batteries, and inverters. Please note that hair dryers are not permitted, as the inverters cannot supply the required current. Some houses use gas fridges to reduce power consumption, and various heating methods, including solar, gas, and wood-fired “donkies,” are employed for hot water. Each house is equipped with a septic tank using activated sludge and a French drain for sewage treatment. Please be mindful of what goes down the drains and toilets to avoid disrupting the treatment process. Standby generators are available at each house if needed.
Servicing Staff
Housekeeping staff will service the accommodations in the mornings, which includes making beds, washing dishes, sweeping, and handling refuse if required. Laundry services can be arranged. The “donkies” at relevant houses will be lit in the afternoons, providing limited hot water. If additional hot water is needed, guests are welcome to stoke the “donkie.”
If visitors wish to tip the service personnel, we kindly request that tips be given to camp management, who will add the amounts to the monthly salaries of the staff. Please inform the service personnel of the tip and its value.
